The division between the Anglican Church and the Catholic Church ( specifically Pope Julius II) were due to King Henry VIII (photo below) and his need for power and authority mixed with his selfishness.
Some background information on two people that were involved:
-Pope Julius II was born on 5 December 1443 and passed away on the 21 February 1513. Julius was portrayed as 'the Fearsome Priest'.
-Henry was born on 28 June 1491 and was King of England from 21 April 1509 to his death which was on 28 January 1547, succeeding his father (Henry VII) and being taken over by Edward VI. Henry was domestically known for the changes he made to the English Constitution and for his part in then English Reformation. He was at first a Roman Catholic ( Hearing up to five masses per day, being awarded with the title 'Defender of Faith' in a battle against Martin Luther's accusations) and later became an Anglican.
The Conflict between Catholicism and Anglicanism
King Henry VIII wanted a divorce because his wife could not make him a child ( sadly they all passed away) so Henry was looking for a new wife. The Pope did not grant the divorce. Due to this Henry started the Church of England and made himself the 'supreme head', putting himself in a position of authority so that he could complete the divorce. This was a time followed by the execution of Catholic priests forced attendance to Anglican masses, dissolution of Catholic buildings and even led to the illegalization of Roman Catholicism. Around the same time other factions in Europe were beginning to reject the Pope's authority. The Anglican Church were being demanded to make further reforms. During the reign of Queen Mary I there was brief restoration of what Henry did to Roman Catholicism.
